Need to sand down old stair case, has built up layers of varnish and gloss paint, will this do the trick and do I need any particular paper?

Yes! it will but you will have to go over it a few times. Use Grade 40 initially changing to higher grade as the paint gets thinner to get a smooth finish.

I have just started that my self, I have used peelaway 7 first as there were several layers, It saves a LOT of time stripping, once peelaway had done its job, I used this it finish, was perfect for the job, started with a rough grade then smoothed with a fine. I'm not sure if this would have done the job from the off, without the peel away.

Easy to use, and light, I have all the house to go at and I'm glad I have this, I don't like heat guns, they can burn the wood. I would recommend this and order the mixed extra pads, good luck!

I would not buy a 100w mouse for the job you are intending. It will be good for finishing corners. I believe you need a sturdier sander - 250/ 300w ( Bosch PSS250AE or similar) and you should try to remove the excess paint with a chemical stripper. If you try to use the mouse for long periods and with pressure you will blow the motor

dont forget old paints are very likely to have lead. Sanding these down will create fine lead dust which can cause serious medical problems, especially for children or those who are pregnant. Use a chemical stripper first.

You'll need coarse sandpaper to remove the built up layers of gloss and varnish then fine sandpaper to finish.
